Chapter 1223 Gwenn the Secretary
Maeve looked at him through tear-filled eyes as if she had a lot to say but didn't know how to begin.
Charles could no longer suppress his emotions. Ignoring the blood still oozing from his chest, he dashed towards Maeve and held
her close. "It's all my fault."
"No, you should stop blaming yourself."
"Maeve... | can't stand the thought of life without you... | can't... I..."
Maeve dissolved in tears, holding him close. "Why are you so foolish..."
"lI never meant to betray you..."

After days of suppressing his emotions, Charles finally broke down. "That day... | was drugged. | really never meant to betray
you..."
Damien closed his eyes, opening and closing his fists.
An hour later, Maeve eventually succumbed to her slumber.
With his chest wrapped in bandages, Charles sat on a bench outside the hospital room, looking up at Damien, who was reclining
against the wall. "Aren't | just pathetic? As a man, not only did | fail to safeguard my wife, | am the one who..."
"There was a powerful drug in your drink that day," Damien sighed. "I had it tested; the blis not yours. That woman from that
day... she deliberately set you up. However, she was very adept at eluding detection, bypassing all the cameras. She didn't want us
to discover her true identity."
Charles raised his gaze. "But | know."
That woman's face... It would be burned in his memory forever!
Just then, Charles's phone rang, displaying an unknown number. He frowned and answered it.
A woman's voice, laced with amusement, greeted him from the other end of the line. "Mr. Luther, it's been a while."
That voice...
Charles's anger flared. "You're the woman from that day!"
"The woman?" The woman on the line laughed. "My nis Gwenn Tanner, remember?
Fury shook Charles' hand as he gripped the phone. Through gritted teeth, he asked, "What nonsense are you spouting?"

"Only the truth."
Charles tightened his jaw. "What is it you want?"
"Nothing much." The woman's tone changed from light-hearted to bone-chilling. "I want to have this child and marry you."
She wanted Cherise and Damien to pay. She wanted them to remember for the rest of their lives that Maeve died because of them!
"You're crazy!" Charles snarled. "Even if you were the only woman left in the world, | would never marry you!"
Charles gritted his teeth, about to erupt in a string of curses, but a look from Damien halted him.
Charles pressed his lips close. "What do you really want?"
"Let's have a meeting in person." Gwenn yawned. "You choose the place."
"The café next to the hospital." Charles took a deep breath. "I have no tfor chitchat, so let's o the pleasantries when we
meet."
