The consciousness and spirit energy in the Dragon Essence Soul might be powerful, but it would not be able to take over Wilbur's
body for at least two minutes. Those two minutes were crucial.
Within those two minutes, Wilbur would use the Dragon Move to channel his spirit energy to rest. If he managed to drain all the
spirit energy out, absorbing the hundred years of cultivation would be much easier.
However, if casting the Dragon Move ended up draining Wilbur's own spirit energy, he would just tough it out and cast it again.
Either way, Wilbur was willing to sacrifice himself rather than have someone else take control of his body.
