Chapter 16 Chapter 16 (+23) Suddenly, the car's headlights con. The two brothers looked awkwardly at the man in the suit beside the vehicle. Then Cedric piped up. "Hey dude, sweet ride. Mind if I sit in it?” William looked sharp in his tailored suit, oozing class and business cunning. He didn't have a disdainful expression, but his tone was flat as he answered, "Unfortunately, no." Without waiting for a response, he got into the car and closed the door. Cedric refused to give up and slumped against the car window, arguing, "I just want one picture of myself in the car William ignored him and started his engine, ready to leave, but the two brothers refused to give way. William adjusted his black-rimmed glasses and stated coolly, "Gentlemen, if you know what's best for you, you'd get out of the way." The brothers reluctantly moved aside, sulking. Cedric immediately changed his tune. “What an uptight asshole. He must be just a chauffeur driving his boss' car anyway.

"Who knows, he might even be srich lady's plaything like that guy Joycelyn keeps in her home. Maybe he's a chauffeur, too." His brother, who felt equally scorned, was quick to agree. "He sure looks the part." Soon, William caught up to the beat-up car chugging along the road. Ellison got off and changed cars in a heartbeat.

Joycelyn hadn't expected that there would be a twhen she'd have her car door opened by Ellison's right- hand man. The sudden gesture caught her off-guard and put her on the spot. She wanted to dig a hole in the ground and burrow into it, but William had been the gallant gentleman and stood by the open door the whole time.

Eventually, she got out of the car with her head down, believing that the big shots in the company wouldn't remember a small fry like her. Even up to the moment she sat in the front passenger seat next to Ellison, she continued trying to assure herself.

When she arrived home, she found the lights in the villa were all turned on, and there were quite a few staff moving things into the mansion. Joycelyn fished out a mask from her bag and put it on.

Ellison unbuckled his seatbelt and looked at her curiously. Frowning, he asked, “Why are you behaving so suspiciously?" "I just think it's better to keep a low profile," she answered sheepishly. She felt insecure with the swarms of workers bustling around. She gripped her seatbelt tightly and refused to budge. "You know what, why don't I wait until they clear out before I alight?" "Suit yourself," Ellison answered nonchalantly as he got out of the car himself and headed for the villa. After he spoke with one of the staff, the whole lot of them sped up their work and made themselves scarce in a matter of minutes.

Joycelyn finally dared to venture out of the car, breathing a sigh of relief. The distinction between her scrappy place and the luxurious villa was miles apart. The only similarity was Joycelyn didn't find the sense of ease and belonging that she craved here either.

Like a dedicated employee, she walked cautiously into the villa, ut her bag down, and opened the refrigerator door to prepare dinner. She wanted to repay Ellison's kindness in any way that she could.

Looking through the contents of the four refrigerators in the kitchen, she considered what she should make. They were filled to the brim with a variety of ingredients, all organized and heatly labeled. It reminded Joycelyn of a supermarket. She asked Ellison, "Mr. Grant, what kind of food do you like?" 1/3 12:55 Mon, Feb 10 0 Chapter 16 "I'm easy," Ellison replied.

Ellison removed his jacket and tie and laid them casually on the edge of the sofa. He removed his cuff links and rolled up his sleeves. Coupled with his pressed pants, he looked like a laidback intellect.

He walked over to the kitchen sink and saw Joycelyn had put on an apron and was taking different ingredients out of the refrigerators. She'd tied her hair up in a bun, revealing her long, smooth neck.

She looked every bit like a beautiful and doting wife. For the first time, the large, empty house seemed aglow with warmth.

Joycelyn turned and caught a glimpse of Ellison standing idly by the sink. He looked cool and nonchalant, but she thought she could detect a hint of warmth on his face.

"I'll get cooking soon, it'll be ready in no time,” she informed him.

"No need to rush. Take your time," he said.

Joycelyn got down to work preparing the different ingredients. She worked speedily, and it was obvious that her knife skills were above average. It was easy to tell that she was a seasoned cook.

Ellison had been watching her graceful movements and felt inclined to ask, "Do you cook a lot?" "Yep," Joycelyn answered with a smile. Ever since she becpart of the Mercer family, she'd started cooking and cleaning and taking care of other chores.

Octavia was two years younger than her and treated as the princess of the family. Joycelyn was naturally relegated to the role of the princess's servant.

If she messed up in any way, she'd be subjected to all sorts of verbal abuse from Olivia and her father and reminded that she was nothing but a leech. Even when she was insulted in front of her mother, her mother had been too timid to fight back.

"We can always eat out if you don't want to cook. You don't have to go through all this trouble don't want double as a babysitter. That's not what I want in my partner," Ellison expressed. my wife to He poured himself a glass of water and drank half of it before putting it down.

Joycelyn grinned and answered, “I don't feel like I'm babysitting you at all.” Ellison raised an eyebrow at that. His eyes stared intently at her and even though he hadn't said anything, feeling his eyes on her made her heart beat a little faster.

"You're a good man, that's why," Joycelyn explained without pausing her work. She'd finished cleaning and cutting the fish and proceeded to ve cover it with a marinade before wrapping it up in parchment for baking. "Looks like you still see things a little too simply," he replied as he continued to watch her hands move. Despite sounding apathetic, the look on his face had softened even more.

"Yeah, I'm a simple-minded woman.

I believe in tit-for-tat, so I'm nice to whoever's nice to me," Joycelynm answered goodenaturedly. Ellison was the first person who had respected her wishes, and she believed that treating him well was only right. "I thought we were on the spage about that," Ellison said. 12:55 Mon, Feb 10 0 Chapter 16 Joycelyn cocked her head. "What do you mean?” she asked, intrigued.
