Inside the takeout container sat a bowl of creamy chicken noodle soup, paired with a side of buttered toast and a
small serving of coleslaw. The meal looked plain and entirely unappetizing
Ariana glanced at it and said, “I don’t want to eat this.”
“What do you want, then?”
Feigning a thoughtful tone, Ariana said, “I remember there's a 24-hour bun shop 100 meters to the left of the
hospital. | really like their buns. Could you go grab sforme, Mr. Lodge?”
Brian clenched his jaw, visibly reining in his temper. “Wait here,” he replied curtly before leaving the room.

As soon as he was gone, Ariana picked up the chicken noodle soup and began eating it spoonful by spoonful.
Mmm, not bad at all.
Outside the hospital, Brian walked down the quiet streets was late at night, and most of the lights in the
surrounding buildings were off, leaving only the streetlights illuminating his path.
Following Ariana’s directions, he turned left at the hospital and walked 100 meters, but no bun shop was in sight.
Irritated, he called Ariana.
The call was quickly answered. Brian asked in a low voice, “Where is this bun shop?”
Ariana pretended to think. “Hmm, | might not remember exactly. Why don’t you check on your phone?”
Before he could respond, she hung up. Let's see how long you'll run around, she thought smugly.
Brian grudgingly looked up the location on his phone, only to discover the shop was a mile away from his current
position. His expression darkened further. But at this point, he had no choice but to get a taxi.
Finding a ride late at night near the hospital wasn’t easy, so he ended up flagging down a cab along the road. By
the the reached the bun shop, 20 minutes had passed.
Inside, the shop offered seven or eight different flavors of buns. It was only then that he realized he had no idea
which flavor Ariana liked.
“Young man, what do you want?” the shop owner asked as she emerged from the back.
The shop was nearly empty at this hour. Brian instinctively reached for his phone to ask Ariana, but he decided
against disturbing her rest. Instead, he told the owner, “Two of each flavor, to go.”
The owner gave him a curious look. That's a lot of buns! “Are you eating all of this by yourself, young mah?”
Without batting an eye, Brian replied, “They're for my girlfriend.”
“Oh. She's in the City Hospital, isn’t she? Lots of people stop by here to get buns for their hospitalized loved
ones. You must really care about her-coming all the way here late at night. You're a good man, young fellow,”

Brian didn’t reply, but as he stood there, he found his thoughts drifting. If Ariana knew about this bun shop, she
must have visited it before. He realized he didn’t know why she'd chere, or much else about her past for
that
matter.
He didn’t know what she liked or disliked, yet she seemed to know everything about him- his favorite foods, daily
routines, even his schedule down to the minute. The contrast unsettled him.
As he glanced at the middle-aged couple running the shop, tirelessly working late into the night, a thought

him. The quiet persistence of the couple reminded him of Ariana.
